Greetings all... Here is the announcement about the 20/20 segment.

THE BALLOONING WITH BRANTA CANADENSIS SEGMENT WILL AIR THIS FRIDAY APRIL
5TH
AT 10PM ON ABC'S 20/20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Everyone!
The official word is that ABC will air the BBC segment tomorrow night on
their 20/20 show! We hope everyone has a chance to tune in and watch. I
am
told it will be a 9-minute segment and if the website is accurate, it
looks
like we are third in the line-up for that evening. We are all on the edge
of
our seats with no idea what to expect from this segment, but if the epic
Father Goose segment is any indication...we have high hopes! You can
check
ABC news website, 20/20 if you want more information.
The timing really couldn't be better since a recent Washington Post
follow-up article alerting readers to the possible return of the BBC
geese,
has spawned many calls about our birds!! The article was picked up by the
Daily press and distributed throughout the eastern United States and
Canada.
We've had calls from Ottawa, Canada to Jacksonville, Florida from readers
hoping to have seen the BBC geese!
Though many of these calls have turned out to be false alarms...
"I've got 40 Canadian Honkers right here on my front lawn in Texas...No,
I
don't see any neckbands, but I think they are your birds!"...
there are a few sightings that seem promising! In particular we have
several
*unofficial reports of two of our birds traveling together, that have
been
sighted in the Fairfax County Regional Parks system, about 3 weeks ago,
and
one that may have been seen last week in Rixeyville, VA, which is only a
hop
skip and a jump from the launch site in Castleton!
*unofficial meaning that no one was close enough to the birds to
positively
identify specific codes for the birds though they did recognize the
familiar
gray and yellow neckbands with black codes.
We are investigating all of these reports and continue to drive around
the
area distributing flyers and talking to area birding groups, schools,
etc...in an effort to get everyone on the lookout for the BBC geese. The
arrival of spring has birds on the move and starting to establish
breeding
territory at local ponds, so our young birds could very well be pushed
out
of the area and/or traveling with a non breeding flock. By the end of
April
most of the migrating birds have returned or moved through the area, but
we
may still be searching for the BBC geese. These birds are wild so it is
difficult to predict their behavior.
KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR OUR BIRDS!
Without radio and/or satellite collars we are completely dependent upon
people like YOU to see our birds and report these sightings to us (1888
2MIGRATE, 264-7283) and/or the Bird Banding Lab (1800 837 BAND) or
Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, (who will in turn let us know
about
sightings).
SO REMEMBER WE NEED YOUR HELP!
(which reminds me... if anyone would like to make a donation towards
radio
telemetry for phase II of BBC, and our upcoming fall 2002 migration...
:>)
please contact me!)
Sooooooooooooooo, WATCH ABC'S 20/20 TOMORROW NIGHT. TELL ALL YOUR
FRIENDS,
FAMILY, AND STRANGERS ON THE STREET.
We look forward to your feedback! Also keep in mind that planning is well
underway for Phase II of BBC with a longer migration this fall. We need
your
support for this important next phase of the experiment, when we really
put
passive migration to the test!
Enjoy the show!
CHEERS!
