[va-richmond-general] Swift Creek Reservoir and Henricus

At Swift Creek Reservoir early this a.m., we saw most of the ducks reported by
others, and also one Canvasback. Others spotted were: Common Loon, Pied-billed
Grebes, Mallards, Amer, Widgeons, Ring-necks, Bufflehead, Ruddy Ducks, Hooded
Mergansers, Amer. Coots, and a Great Blue Heron. Most of the birds were visible
from the pullout on Genito Rd., but almost none from Woolridge, possibly due to
the high winds. Almost none at Sunday park, even in the calm water near the dam.

At Henricus, we saw Gadwalls, Widgeons, Northern Shovelers, at least one Amer.
Kestral on a wire near the parking lot, a sycamore tree (past the boardwalk on
the left) with at least 4 holes full of N. Flickers, Yel.-bellied Sapsuckers,
Winter Wrens, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, several Yel.-rumped Warblers, one House
Finch, an Eastern Phoebe, and enough of the "normal" residents to total 31
species. An earlier visit might have been more productive - we arrived at 10
a.m., and by noon, many of the ducks in the marsh had gone elsewhere. The
sapsuckers and Winter Wren were also past the boardwalk, near the swampy area
on the left of the trail as you head toward the merge with the James River
trail.
