[va-richmond-general] Re: Swans in Chester

I have seen the swans - about 4-7 of them, plus possibly ducks and a Canada
goose. I reported this to the board earlier, and the opinion was that they
were mute swans, a non-protected species imported from Europe. Some of them
have curved necks, but I saw one with a straight neck the other day. I have
yet to be able to discern orange or yellow on their beaks, a characteristic
of mute swans. Further, I note that the Great Backyard Bird Count of 2009
February included a report in Chester of 7 tundra swans. So I wonder if they
really are tundra swans, or if they are mute swans and the birdcounter
misreported them. They are not trumpeter swans - they don't occur here.

I have taken pictures of the swans and sent one in an earlier email.

Subject: [va-richmond-general] Swans in Chester

I was driving my daughter to school yesterday on Chester Road from 288 to Rt
. 10, and in the swamp on the right there were 4 or 5 swans. My daughter
said she has seen them from the bus before. Does anyone know if they are
usually there? I'd love to go back and see them not from a car (smile)!
