Had some comp time at work that had to be used so instead of going to Henricus
like I do a few days a week after work I went East a bit to Sunken Meadows in
Surry County. I work in Hopewell.
There were a few Great Blue Herons on both sides of the road. 1 Snipe only a
few hundred feet away from where a bunch of us saw a pair last Spring. The ones
in 2004 were visible for a long time Dr. Suttle got some great pictures of
them. The Osprey pair was back this year. There was one Green Heron in the cove
on the James River side. There were at lest 9 Spotted Sand Pipers total in the
lakes on both sides of the road. They were mostly in pairs ,some of them doing
mating ritual type behavior. The best sigtings were pairs on logs. Spotteds
like to perch on logs and find food sources on them too. I had never seen so
many of this species more than 2O miles from the ocean . A few terns were at
the Jamestone Ferry landings. Very few Cormorants were perching in the area
most were out fishing and not sighted. Dutch Gap had some this week too
