A very sunny and pretty day out there yesterday! Sky was blue, a little breezy but still pleasant. Noted several winter ducks at the "entrance wetland" area, including Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Greenwinged Teal, Mallard Duck, Ringnecked Duck and what was possibly American Black Duck (didn't get the best view of them). There was an entire *flock* of Killdeer on the exposed mudflats because the tide was down (near the little trail overlook bench on the Dutch Gap main trail). There were in excess of 40 individuals running up and down the mud flats and picking at all sorts of interesting bits. Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets were out and about still, providing a gorgeous view. Mockingbirds and Thrashers were amongst the leaves and the Sparrows looking for goodies, too. Three immature Bald Eagles suddenly appeared over the Henricus side of the park and kettled together low overhead, providing a chance to see how far their underside white markings hadn't receded quite yet. In the distance, an older immature with a mostly white head and tail (but still with black tail stripe) appeared to join the trio. Only five seven (7) Black Vultures were seen during 6 hours at the park, and those were found near the Enon Bridge or on the Dutch Gap side. No more elegant and graceful silvery-black gliders in the air to be seen, and especially on such a nice day for it, too. A clear blue sky bereft of its most famous gliders...I miss them.
