I took the Jamestown ferry today 02-05-05 boarding it at about 4:45 PM as =
I returned from an event in VA Beach and no I did not not go in the water o=
nly watched some co-workers from my agency do it. In addition to the usual =
Ring Billed and Black Backed Gulls and Cormorants and Great Blue Herons on =
the pillings and shore lines on both sides of the river there was a perfect=
ly healthy Brown Pelican using a cluster of pillings on the Jamestown side.=
I have never seen a Brown Pelican so far inland before and especially not =
in the winter. Pelicans are kind of rare in Virginia in the winter time. Th=
e ferry can be a great birding platform.Today, I saw a pair of mergansers ,=
I forgot which species they were ,eat a bunch of silverside minnows in the =
middle of the river.Sometimes a Bald Eagle or two can be seen perched on th=
e buoys in the river close to where the ferry passes by but not today. At H=
enricus earlier this week in the evenings the place was infested with Carol=
ina Wrens , the number of Shoveler Ducks using the big pond seem to have b=
een reduced by the recent freezes and the start of the early stages of migr=
ation.I never did see Pintails in the big pond at the entrance this year. =
A third year Bald Eagle was at the big pond on Wednesday. Great Blue Herons=
have started to nest and the Redwing Blackbirds are a little more vocal an=
d active. The Wood Duck population of the big pond has been great this wint=
er. Anybody got a handle on the number of Heron nests at Henricus so far t=
his year?
Sincerely,
Tyler Turpin

Late Tuesday afternoon I visited Short Pump Town Center for the first time=
. =20
About 20 Cedar Waxwings were perched in one of the small ornamental trees =
in=20
the courtyard.

This afternoon as the snow started, a Hermit Thrush was foraging on the =20
ground outside close to the building where I work in Henrico.
