Ben, our white throats like the suet cake also. But I make it easy for
them by crumbling some and sprinkling it on a deck rail and deck floor. In
fact all the birds like that! The cardinals can get on the suet basket if
you have the type that has drop down perches. When the grackles are
obnoxious, I don't fill the basket but just sprinkle. Even the woodpeckers
like the rail or floor food. And I've also noticed the little birds--snow
birds, even nuthatches--watching for crumbs droping down.
