Just thought I'd share some interesting bird behavior. Our yard has been a haven for white throated sparrows all winter. We must have at least twenty around our feeders every day. A while back I had noticed one male was taking an interest to our suet feeder, at least he seemed to linger at the base of the tree trunk on which it hangs. He would stoop there to look up as if he couldn't quite figure out how to crawl up the trunk to get to it. Recently I've noticed when a woodpecker or nuthatch visits the suet feeder, the same male sparrow leaves the flock and takes up its position at the base of the tree under the suet feeder. Then he'll pick up the scraps of suet that fall. As soon as the bird at the suet basket leaves, the smart sparrow will finish off the crumbs and return to his flock. But his eye must constantly be on the suet feeder because he's right back when another woodpecker comes along. I guess he finally figured out how to get the goods. None of his buddies have caught on yet, though. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
