[va-richmond-general] Re: Should I Put up a Bluebird Box?

I have House Wrens and Eastern Bluebirds nesting together. The wrens, as
someone else mentioned, nest closer to the house. The main thing to consider is
that you not put up any boxes that are not protected from predators, otherwise
you are just creating a snake or raccoon MacLunch. My bluebird boxes sometimes
have chickadees, too, and they are already occupying a box. Seems too cold to
me to be thinking about camping out and raising babies. Put up your PROTECTED
boxes and see what moves in!

Subject: [va-richmond-general] Should I Put up a Bluebird Box?

I have been seeing bluebirds at the George Wythe playing field for the past
month or so. There are at least 3, maybe more. This is a BIG DEAL for us
because for the first 20 years that I lived in this neighborhood we had no
sightings of bluebirds. Last year a pair bred successfully in the backyard of
my neighbor across the street from me.
Do you all agree that I should NOT put a bluebird box up in my yard because I
have House Wrens? Do other people who have House Wrens manage to have bluebirds
nest in their yard also? I do not want to encourage them to nest in my yard and
then have them get evicted by House Wrens. I'd be interested in any thoughts
anyone has on this.
