[va-richmond-general] Shirley Plantation today

Shirley is on Rt. 5 E. of richmond in Charles City County.

Paul Bedell led a Field Trip for a VCU Continuing Ed. class today and I
joined him. Among the birds of note were:
1. 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers
2. FOS Yellow-bellied sapsucker
3. 10-12 Palm Warblers together along with a Blue-headed Vireo and a
Yellow-throated Warbler. Paul and I had also seen one on Sat. in James River Park.
This is really late for them - the Gold Book indicates for extreme dates Oct. 4th
for the P
Piedmont.
4. A group of Meadowlarks - 10-15 together. Nice to see..
5. 4 Bald Eagles in the air at the same time - spectacular.
6. Bird of the morning was an Avocet in the empoundment at Shirley - the
first I have ever seen there,

On the way to Shirley I stopped at Crewes Channel which is virtually dry, but
- there were Snipe everywehere, many of them - over 25 at least.
