I did some birding by car today (because of the rain). I drove through
Shirley Plantation in Charles City County. The fields are flooded and
muddy, and shorebirds were everywhere! But, the highlight was a CATTLE
EGRET and a flock of BOBOLINKS. Other notables:
Wood ducks (several males and a female with babies in tow)
American Coot (still hanging around)
Barred Owl (not seen, heard calling from a distance)
Least Sandpiper
Greater Yellowlegs
Lesser Yellowlegs
Wilson's Snipe
Solitary Sandpiper
Spotted Sandpiper
Blue Grosbeak
Indigo Bunting
Red-eyed Vireo
White-eyed Vireo
Tree Swallow
Barn Swallow
Chimney Swift
American Kestrel
Eastern Kingbird
Northern Bobwhite (heard)
Orchard Oriole
Eastern Meadowlark
Field Sparrow
Green Heron
Also, here at home, I had three SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and one SOLITARY
SANDPIPER seen from the yard, feeding at the edge of the lake.
