Late yesterday morning I went to Shirley Plantation and Turkey Island Rd.
along Rt. 5 for a little while. No luck with bobolinks (maybe one female
flying briefly above a wheat field), but the fields are very wet and I found
blue grosbeak males, eastern kingbirds (including a flock of 10), indigos,
common yellowthroats, savannah sparrow, solitaries, greater and lesser
yellowlegs, killdeer, and meadowlarks. 2 bobwhites were calling on Turkey
Isl. Rd. Still missing spotted sandpipers everywhere I go. Crewe's Channel
had high water and state vehicles filling the little parking area.
Went to 42nd St. at mid-morning for about an hour and found black poll and
Cape May singing near the car, prothonotary, American redstart, northern
parula, black and white, yellow warbler, Swainson's and wood thrush, great
crested flycatcher, eastern kingbird, gray catbird, cedar waxwing, BGGN, red
eyed vireo, RT hummer and at least 4 male scarlet tanagers (one was the
orange variant and sat briefly with a red one in the same tree-awesome!).
The mulberries are showing a faint blush of color, but the squirrels seem to
like them unripened. I hope there will be enough left for a repeat of last
year!
A quick visit to The Wetlands yielded northern waterthrush, singing Acadian
flycatchers, white eyed vireos, yellow billed cuckoo, BGGN, yellow throated
warbler, and no owls. I haven't visited the owlet since 5/1, so if anyone
has seen it I would appreciate an update. I did not check to see if the
kingfisher burrows were flooded, though I doubt the water got that high.
There were also all the usual suspects, and I probably left something out
(like the black billed cuckoo I left off the Harrison Lake report the other
day! Listened to the tape after I had already posted.).
