Successfully netted 2 unbanded Northern Saw Whet Owls this morning at the Powhatan WMA once the waxing gibbous moon :-) was covered with clouds. 2 beautiful females. Our last catch in 2008 was March 2. The road leading into our nets was littered with American Woodcock...they scurried around like Sanderlings. They "peented" they probed, they flew, they "timber-doodled." It was the best display we had ever seen and went on into the wee hours. Also had a loud, stop-in-your-tracks "Hooo-waahh" of a Barred Owl as we made a net run. Pretty cool being out in the woods without a jacket and without a headlamp as the moon lit the path and the temps held in the 50's. The best hour I ever lost. Hope you've all sprung ahead. (Attaching a Big-footesque photo of a Woodcock and of course a nswo beauty)
