[va-richmond-general] Saw Whet flight in Powhatan this morning

Netted four previously banded NSWO's in Powhatan just after midnite this morning. The owls kept hitting the nets until 4:30....am.  One owl was first banded at our station Dec. 28, 2008.  Birds 2 and 3 were banded last year in the Shenandoah and may now be over-wintering in Powhatan. We had encountered one of these back in November and report her to be 6 grams fatter. Our remaining owl is still a mystery as we wait to hear where this bird was intially banded. All the birds were adult birds and each cuter than the next. Heard a Great Horned Owl, watched a Red Fox watch us and we all cheered as the clear sky turned to clouds, the temperature bumped up to a balmy 31 and made for an unexpected owl flight.

G'night,
