[va-richmond-general] Rt. 5, eastern wood pewees are here

Finally got a satisfactory long look at one bobolink today out at Shirley
Plantation. There were orchard orioles and a summer tanager there, and a
green heron flew across the road at the creek. Very few shorebirds in the
afternoon. One of the peregrines at the Benjamin Harrison bridge was kind
enough to hover in the strong wind above the first tower, and there was a
tern crossing high above the road on the far end of the bridge. Couldn't ID
it and manage the turn into Jordan Point marina with the traffic. Eastern
wood pewees were all over the place at Harrison Lake Fish Hatchery, and the
killdeer eggs have not hatched in the parking area. The orange cone Mike
Odom put in front of them has done the job (thanks!). At the hatchery and
along Kimages Rd. across Rt. 5 I heard several Acadian flycatchers and of
course prothonotaries. Along the road to the lake I saw a pair of blue
grosbeaks and immediately after they disappeared I heard nestlings begging.
Prairie, black and white, and hooded warblers, plus a scarlet tanager male
and several great cresteds were heard and/or seen along that road. The wind
and heat had many raptors soaring in thermals and fighting the gusts. Not
too bad considering how late I slept in this morning.
