[va-richmond-general] Rockbridge County CBC results

the results of the Rockbridge County Cristmas bird count of December 26th are 
posted below. I have relatives in the area who  sent the results to me off the 
newspaper webpage. Rockbridge County is Lexington Fairfield , VMI, Washington 
and Lee University, and Goshen and Brownsburg areas etc.

Seventy-three bird species, including several unusual species, and 8,086 
individual birds were identified during the 2008 Audubon Christmas Bird Count 
for the Lexington area, held Dec. 26. Two additional species were recorded 
during “count week” (the days immediately before and after count day).


This year’s complete tally is as follows: Pied-billed grebe, 7; doublecrested 
cormorant, 1; great blue heron, 19; black vulture, 134; turkey vulture, 78; 
Canada goose, 332; green-winged teal, 8; black duck, 23; mallard, 109; northern 
pintail, 2; northern shoveler, 6; gadwall, 17; ring-necked duck, 21; hooded 
merganser, 24; common merganser, 2; bald eagle, 1; northern harrier, 1; 
sharp-shinned hawk, 5; Cooper’s hawk 2; red-shouldered hawk, 4; redtailed hawk, 
24; kestrel, 8; wild turkey, 8; American coot, 1: common snipe, 2; rock dove, 
315; mourning dove, 249; eastern screech-owl, 15; belted kingfisher, 16;

Also, red-bellied woodpecker, 51; yellow-bellied sapsucker, 19; downy 
woodpecker, 61; hairy woodpecker, 13; northern flicker, 34; pileated 
woodpecker, 30; eastern phoebe, 9; blue jay, 167; American crow, 1,149; common 
raven, 12; black-capped chickadee, 15; Carolina chickadee, 87; tufted titmouse, 
142; white-breasted nuthatch, 46; brown creeper, 1; Carolina wren, 87; winter 
wren, 2; golden-crowned kinglet, 35; ruby-crowned kinglet, 13;

Also, eastern bluebird, 166; hermit thrush, 22; American robin, 315; gray 
catbird, 1; northern mockingbird, 47; European starling, 2,161; cedar waxwing, 
321; yellow-rumped warbler, 189; eastern towhee, 24; field sparrow, 36; 
chipping sparrow, 3; fox sparrow, 7; song sparrow, 82; whitethroated sparrow, 
447; white-crowned sparrow, 37; dark-eyed junco, 343; northern cardinal, 210; 
eastern meadowlark, 41; common grackle, 3; purple finch, 114; house finch, 132; 
pine siskin, 38; American goldfinch, 297; and house sparrow, 7.

During the count week, the following additional species were seen: eight 
redhead ducks, three killdeer and one more bald eagle.
