I saw a yellow-rumped warbler earlier in my yard. There have been a lot of
birds around my feeder as of late, mostly snowbirds (slate-colored juncos)
and chipmunk birds (white-throated sparrows), but we also get red-bellied
woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, titmice, a cardinal pair, and mourning
doves.
Today I went to a telescope party at a home near Beulah Road and Rt 10. With
daylight almost over and clouds coming in, all we could see with telescopes
in the sky was the moon. I saw a bunch of birds sitting up high in a tree
across the street, so I aimed my 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope
(Celestron Nexstar 8) at 50 power at the tree. I got a view of one of the
birds - they did not fly around too much. It was a robin; I could tell from
his red breast. Apparently there was a flock of robins here. I then put the
telescope at about 180 power, and I was able to get the robin in view - his
red breast filled more than half the view through the telescope. The bird
looked dark because the sun was just about to set. But it was interesting
being able to point an astronomical telescope at a bird and get a good look
at it. I also heard Carolina wrens at the house but did not see any.

4 birders saw 25 species of birds this morning on the trip to Lewis Ginter
Botanical Garden.
Hightlights were a single Cedar Waxwing , 3 of the uncommon this winter
Yellow Rumped Warblers which posed for the group, a hyperactive as usual but
stayed in two bushes and one tree for a while Ruby Crowned Kinglet, nice
view of a Red Shouldered Hawk perched in a tree ,and a pair of Downy
Woodpeckers.
A Belted Kingfisher ,which is not seen seen or heard on every trip to Ginter
but there is a resident pair on the property, was heard by all a few times.
Sincerely,
Tyler Turpin
