[va-richmond-general] Re: Riverside Dr. (JRPS)--redheads, canvasbacks, and the usual suspects

Hi,

Just to let you know, I checked out Swift Creek Reservoir Monday, and there were lots of male and female Buffleheads and Ruddy Ducks close to the Wooldridge causway across the lake. With a little patience it was very easy to get sharp and interesting shots of them in action with the 600 mm lens and 2X extender. Shorter telephoto lenses should give good results as well. Lots of gulls too, mostly Ring-billed with a few Herring mixed in. A few Great Blue Herons as well. An earlier report indicated there were Ring-necks and Hooded Mergansers there too, but not the time I was there. May be you will have better luck.

Check out this album: http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/271318975uSbKaX
You will have to look through since this album contains just about all the birds Linda & I have photographed in Virginia, but the birds are in approximate taxonomic order, so you won't have to go too far before hitting the ducks. The places and times are generally listed. The album has received well over 200,000 hits worldwide. I discovered recently that lots of folks use it as an online field guide.

You even keep a city list? LOL! I am such a slacker! Gotta love this
weather--just figures the curlew would disappear when I found a good reason
to make the trip! At least the ducks are all here....

Hello All,
Thanks to Jan for the heads up. I looked along the river today between
Hugenot Bridge and Willow Oaks Golf course (ie. Where the Wetlands section
ends) around 1pm. Good numbers of ducks; I estimated 250 Bufflehead, 350
Ring Necked Duck. 27 + Lesser Scaup, 49 Canvasback and 2 female Goldeneye
(City tick!). The latter 3 species were seen from the Wetlands section.
