[va-richmond-general] Riverside Dr. (JRPS) and Stony Point pond

This morning I found 5 pied billed grebes (6 yesterday) and a pair of wood
ducks out in the aquatic vegetation away from the bank along Riverside, plus
a pair of common mergansers upriver from the emergency vehicle lot at Pony
Pasture. The buffleheads continue in lower numbers along with the usual DC
cormorants, mallards and Canadas. In the late afternoon I found 5 grebes, a
couple of canvasbacks hanging out with the mallards in the quarry pond
behind the fence, the pair of common mergs, and a belted kingfisher working
the pond and the river. As I mailed envelopes in the office park I saw a
pair of hooded mergs, the only ring necked duck I have seen in days, plus
the usual Canadas, mallards and odd domestics. I had decided the redhead
must have moved on when a duck flew frantically in front of the car and
landed fairly close-the redhead, of course. Unfortunately, pairs of mute
swans continue in both locations. I see crocus and other flowers coming up
as I shiver in the latest cold wind. Spring won't stay away forever, so it
is nice to see the variety of ducks even as their numbers drop and things
seem to be moving and preparing. Have a great evening!
