Va-birders....
14 hearty souls participated in the Richmond Audubon Society field trip
to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel islands on Saturday, 1/18/03. While
starting out a bit chilly, the day turned out to be quite nice with
minimal wind and beautiful sunshine. The birds cooperated as well.
Highlights included:
3 Harlequin Ducks
Surf Scoters
Black Scoters
White-winged Scoters ( with great looks at a pair 30 feet away)
Common Eider
Long-tailed Ducks
Red-breasted Mergansers
Common and Red-throated Loons (mostly Red-throated)
Double-crested and Great Cormorants
Northern Gannets
Brown Pelicans
Lesser Black-backed Gull
Boneparte's Gulls
Purple Sandpipers
Ruddy Turnstones
American Oystercatchers
American Pipit feeding out in the open
Palm Warbler
Some of us ventured over to the Eastern Shore and enjoyed the beautiful,
snowy landscape. We also had a few snow showers in the middle of the
mostly sunny day. And, the hot soup at Stingray's tasted especially good
after our outing. What a great season for birding!
