[va-richmond-general] Re: Response to Screech Owl

This is how I found two different screech owls in Massachusetts. I had
no idea the owls were around. I did the screech owl call to attract the
chickadees and any associated little birds, but instead of flying to me
they flew to the hiding spot of the screech owls, in both cases among
dead oak leaves still hanging on the winter tree. I was grateful to the
chickadees; one of these was my first screech owl.
Neat!

During the Breeding Bird Atlas Project, I stood in front of a
"potential" screech owl nest cavity. Making a sound similar to the
screech owl call, the chickadees, titmice and nuthatches responded by
dive bombing the hole of the nest cavity. In some book, I had read of
this behavior but, I'm sorry I can't remember where.
