[va-richmond-general] RE Purple Martin Roost

We watched the purple martins tonight, there seemed to be fewer than earlier
reports, and no raptors around. Very fun! Had one hit a power line and go
down stunned. I relocated it off of the road into the grass, and within a
few minutes, it was up and away.

We were wondering about why pick 20 trees in downtown Richmond to roost in?
I remember a show about crows roosting in a small city in New York, and a
key factor were the lights at night which let them keep an eye on predators.
Also thought that maybe the relatively open air space around the trees make
it easier to approach and leave anyway they want. Any other ideas?
