[va-richmond-general] RAVENS in Goochland County, new birding spot 7/22/09

I usually stop by the boat landing on the Powhatan side of the James at Maidens
on my way to the Farmers Market in Goochland.? This morning, right after I got
out of the car, I heard two RAVENS calling, it sounded like they were across
the river on the Goochland side.? On my way back, I decided to check to see if
there was access from the Goochland side from Maidens Loop.? (There are two
parts of Maidens Loop, the one to the north goes down to a little shopping
center and the Post Office, and there is a second part closer to the river.?
They do not connect because of the railroad).? I tried the section closer to
the river and discovered that there is a new park called Tucker's Park at
Maidens Crossing.?It?is directly?across the river from the Maidens boat
landing.?There is a sign indicating that the public is welcome to park on the
side of the road (there is a pull off) and walk in behind the gate.? There is
an abandoned paved road that goes through some woods, then between t
wo soybean fields and down to the river.? Right now it's not clear what the
boundaries are or what the future plans for the park are.? There is a web site
at

http://maidenscrossingpark.com/

This looks like a potentially interesting birding spot that might be
interesting during migration.? ?I didn't get there until after 9 AM and it was
getting pretty hot already.? I did find cardinals, indigo buntings, Carolina
wren, and yes, I heard the RAVEN again.? Ravens are known to breed at a quarry
in Goochland.
