[va-richmond-general] Re: Purple Martin Festival

Jim and all,

The number of people at the festival this weekend should not be a problem.
Festival organizers are certainly in tune with maintaining a certain distance.
There are hordes of cars and people down there almost every weekend night to go
to the restaurants and taverns since birds first colonized that roost two years
ago. This includes people going in and out of their cars directly under the
roost trees These birds initially entered an area with major people traffic.
So as long as people are not sitting under the trees clapping their hands as
has happened until the bird lovers began to get down there in force and give
the other locals some education. There have been groups of more than 30 roost
watchers this year and it hasn't hampered the birds at all. The only
disruption appears to be the red-tail that has learned it can sit in the tree
and ambush the martins as they come in to roost.

There is going to be a festival this Saturday. Huge hordes of people and cars
will be descending on the 17th street area. Will that scare off the purple
martins so that they fly away and never return?
