[va-richmond-general] Powhatan WMA MAPS opening day

Mary Arginteanu, Larry Robinson, John Dillard, Cindy & Gary Vandenboom, and
I along with some enthusiastic visitors had a beautiful morning for the
opening day of this years MAPS (monitoring avian productivity and
survivorship) banding station at the Powhatan Wildlife Management Area.  We
banded 18 new birds and had 3 returns from last year at this first of 8
sessions.  Numerous close-up photos were taken.

 The birds in hand were:

white-eyed vireos  2 (one a return from last year)
red-eyed vireos  2 (one a return from last year who was in breeding
condition)
indigo buntings 4 (1 returned older male from last year + 2 young males and
1 young female in their first
breeding season; all three males were in breeding condition)
prairie warblers 2 ( a young male in breeding condition and a young female)
Acadian flycatcher 1
black-and-white warbler 1 (young female in breeding condition)
goldfinch 1 (a young male)
hooded warbler 1 (female in breeding condition)
ovenbirds 2 (one older and one young male, both in breeding condition)
scarlet tanager 1 (female in breeding condition)
Carolina wren 1 (female in breeding condition)
yellow-breasted chat 1 (male in breeding condition)
catbird 1 (first breeding season but sex unknown as yet)
cardinal 1 (female in breeding condition)

Our next MAPS banding session is on Tues., 6/8.
