Available Position: Important Bird Areas Coordinator - Virginia

Purpose of the Position:  The Virginia IBA Coordinator will be responsible
for implementing and coordinating the Important Bird Areas (IBA) Program in
Virginia.  The IBA program is Audubon's centerpiece conservation program.
This is an integral part of the organization's mission to conserve and
restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their
habitats, for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

Essential Functions:  The key components of the IBA program include the
identification of sites and the organization of volunteers to monitor birds
at, and assess threats to IBAs, as well as the development of conservation
strategies for IBAs.  The IBA Coordinator will be charged with coordinating
and working with the VA IBA technical committee (VATC) and the VA IBA
Steering Committee.  This will principally include the management of the IBA
nomination and review process and the coordination of volunteers who will
assist with the gathering and analysis of data, web site development,
literature searches, and research summaries.  The primary tasks getting
started will be the compilation of information about sites and managing this
information using the World Bird Database.

As a first step the IBA Coordinator will be responsible for the following
specific activities:
·     Develop a list of priority species, beginning with prioritization
within federal and state listed species, and Partners in Flight WatchList
species;
·     In conjunction with the VATC, develop science-based criteria and
thresholds for identifying IBAs;
·     Oversee and manage the VA IBA web site which will include information
listed above as developed, research and NABCI summaries, updates on IBA
Program progress, links to state/national/international bird initiative
sites, and an MS Word nomination form linked to the web site, etc.;
·     Conduct mailing of site nomination forms to at least 300 stakeholder
and expert groups and individuals;
·     Promote the IBA program by giving a presentation to each Virginia
Audubon Society Chapter and state bird club, and at a meeting of the
Virginia Society of Ornithology and the Virginia Chapter of the Wildlife
Society;
·     Identify key gaps requiring data analysis or short-term additional
monitoring needed to identify IBAs;
·     Coordinate the review of 100 nominated sites and the identification of
at least 75 IBAs
·     Designation of at least three priority IBAs, with posting of
partnership signs, ribbon cutting ceremony, and press package.
·     Prepare status reports to assist the VAC in meeting their IBA Contract
deliverables and other required reporting.

Additional Functions:  Conduct outreach and education activities including
public presentations, written articles for popular literature and outreach
to media on the importance of IBAs; work with development staff in
fundraising through proposals to foundations and government agencies, donor
visits and special events.  Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to
meet deadlines are essential.  Travel statewide by personal vehicle which
will include overnights and weekends.  Other duties as assigned.

Measurement of Performance:  Annual Performance Management Plan (PMP)

Relationships: Internal:  Work with national IBA staff and the Virginia
Audubon Council.  Strong interrelationships with other Audubon programs and
administrative staff.  External:  Strong relationship with staff from the
Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and other Virginia state
agencies.  Extensive contact with Audubon chapters, private landowners,
federal agencies (e.g., U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, National Park Service,
Natural Resources Conservation Service), community leaders, conservation
organizations, donors, media, and volunteers.

Equipment:  Standard office equipment (i.e., phone, fax, copier, MS Windows
operating system computer, etc.).  Familiarity if not expertise with
Microsoft Software products and ESRI software.

Qualifications:  B.S. degree is required, M.S. preferred, in conservation
biology, wildlife biology, ornithology, natural resources, or equivalent.
Minimum two to three years professional experience preferred.  Keen interest
in bird conservation, experience in avian monitoring and inventory
methodologies desired.  Excellent public speaking and writing skills,
familiarity with a variety of software programs, ability to organize and
manage complex projects with a variety of partners, and a willingness to
travel.  Fundraising experience is a plus.
