I'd also like to encourage folks to attend "Birds & Blossoms" through the
Norfolk Botanical Garden. I attended my second year in a row this past
weekend, and the variety and diversity of birds sighted was fantastic. I was
fortunate enough to see a Red-cockaded Woodpecker, which as you know is
endangered and has very limited range, and attend a lecture by Dr. Ralph Costa
discussing saving the woodpecker. During another fieldtrip, I spotted a
Yellow-billed Cuckoo for our group, and earned the nickname, "The Cuckoo Lady"
during the weekend, which I took with all good humor. The Ovenbirds were
visible (for once!), the Green and Night-crowned Herons in abundance, and the
Tiger Beetles were out to greet us on a nature preserve beach. It's an
inexpensive little vacation to do, and the fieldtrips are diverse,
well-organized, and the guides do a great job. I encourage you to consider
attending if you haven't already.
Best,
Irene Ries
