[va-richmond-general] Piney Grove-May 28

9 of us hit the trail before sunrise and had good looks at the Red-Cockaded
Woodpecker at the Nature Conservancy's Piney Grove Site in Sussex County this
morning. A little unexpected rain fell early which hastened our breakfast plans
at the VA Diner. After the 3rd refill of coffee the sun was shining, we were
re-charged and back out for about 4 more hours of birding. Thanks to Clark
White from Cape Henry Bird Club for leading our group on another successful
trip!
Highlights:

Red-Cockaded Woodpecker
Northern Bobwhite (pair seen in a field)
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Red-Headed Woodpecker
Eastern Bluebird
Eastern Kingbird
Great-Crested Flycatcher
Blue-grey Gnatcatcher
Pine Warbler
Black and White Warbler
Prairie
Hooded
Prothonotary
Ovenbird
Yellow-breasted Chat
Common Yellowthroat
Summer Tanager (pair)
 Rufous-sided Towhee
Blue Grosbeak
Indigo Bunting
Brown-headed Nuthatch
...and the usual suspects.
Many turtles, 2 very long black snakes and many butterflies.

Excellent trip-the promptitude of the birders is to be commended!
