[va-richmond-general] Piney Grove: 4 June 2006

9 birders flocked to the VA Diner before sunrise to start our day at the Nature 
Conservancy's Piney Grove Site. The morning chorus was well worth the rush hour 
drive to Wakefield. Great-Crested Flycatchers, Yellow Breasted Chats and 
Ovenbirds sounded off as we made our way in the preserve. The target bird; the 
Red-cockaded Woodpecker was seen by all. Many active nest sites were visible as 
well. Red-headed Woodpeckers were in great supply as they drummed on many dead 
trees ;-)

After a little sausage, hash browns, eggs and oh yeah some coffee at the VA 
Diner we headed back out to swamp and woods to tally a list of 61 species. The 
weather could not have been any better-so good we birded till 1:30.
