[va-richmond-general] Pea Island last weekend

At Pea Island last Saturday and Sunday we saw Northern Shovelers, Long-tailed
ducks, Black Ducks, Mallards, and Buffleheads; American Coots, Pied-billed
Grebes, about 2000 Double-crested Cormorants migrating along the coast, about
500 Tundra Swans, White Ibis, Tricolored and Great Blue Herons, an American
Bittern, Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls, Brown Pelicans, two Ospreys on
the Currituck Sound bridge, Sanderlings, 5 Eastern Meadowlarks, about 8
Northern Harriers, Eastern Towhee, Song and Savannah Sparrows, various
blackbirds and crows, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Eastern Phoebe, and a few others.
On the surf about 500 Northern Gannets were seen diving after fish while the
cormorants, pelicans and gulls went after the leftovers. This was all in two
days, about 2-3 hours each day. Fog was a problem in early morning and again
around midday when the wind changed. We saw no Snow Geese and very few
shorebirds. Once we saw some sanderlings feeding on the beach while walking at
night. When do they sleep?
