[va-richmond-general] Re: PUMA roost 8/1/08

This reminds me of something else. The Richmond Braves are about to leave
town. The New York Mets are dissatisfied with having a far-away AAA farm
team, the New Orleans Zephyrs, and they may try to seek an agreement with
the Syracuse Sky Chiefs instead. If that happens, the Toronto Blue Jays
would be stuck with the Zephyrs. They may want to move the Zephyrs to
Richmond. If they do that, given that the parent team would be named for
blue jays, and given that the team is in Richmond, home of the Big August
Bird Spectacle, I would recommend naming the team the Richmond Purple
Martins.

So you saw the purple martins tonight. Was there a big crowd of people
there? I may try to see them again.

I don't know about using those four-letter abbreviations. This is a PUMA:

Hardly like a purple martin. Reminds me of when we abbreviated Canada goose
to CAGO, which is Spanish for "I poop.". That's what these geese do a lot
of, especially when they are in great numbers.

The first wave landed right on schedule at 8:19pm. The hawk put on its
regular show of ambush hunting and the one peregrine seen did not stick
around-somehow the birds seemed to know it was not a threat tonight because
they did not appear to react when it took off and disappeared. There are
many people there every night if anyone wants to come down and feels timid
about the Bottom at night. This is truly a unique opportunity if you are
debating about whether to go or not. I see some of the same non-birding
faces repeatedly-these martins may be changing a few lives! I may go again
at sunrise if anyone is wanting to do that-just email me.
