[va-richmond-general] Re: Nuthatchlings

The nuthatchlings are gone.

I saw a lot of nuthatch instances or sightings yesterday near the bird
house. Anne and I thought it was the mother. At times we saw two nuthatches
at a time - mother and father. We never saw three or more at a time, so we
wondered whether or not the mother was still feeding them, or whether they
had left the nest. Today I saw no nuthatches at all at the bird house, and
tonight when I looked out to see how the chicks were doing, they were all
gone. They all had fled the nest yesterday, and now there are six more
nuthatches in the wild.

I am wondering if the birdhouse will be used any more this year by birds. Is
nesting season over? Should I throw out the nest to take out the smell of
nuthatches, hoping some other bird will use the house? Or just wait until
next year? I have avoided putting food near the box, such as suet, for fear
that this will attract nuisance birds to the nuthatch nest. Can I hang up
suet there now?

Today I went out to the nuthatch birdhouse to take a picture of the
nuthatchlings in the box. Sure enough, I found WBNU6 there - six
white-breasted nuthatches. Later I saw the mother nuthatch coming into the
nest to feed her babies, so I did not scare them that much. Here is the
picture I took:
