My son and I went canoeing on the Nottoway River this morning (3/28) from
Carey's Bridge (where Rt 35 crosses the river.) About a 40-45 minute drive
from Richmond (I 95 to Rt 35 East/South). Several parulas singing away as
well as pine warblers, a couple of Louisiana waterthrushes, and MANY
yellow-throated warblers. Also caught snatches of song from a mystery
warbler in the swampy woods adjacent to the boat launch. Saw the state
champion bald cypress and the probable state champion swamp chestnut oak
(18' 7" diameter) as a bonus. The healthy population of black flies
encountered when off the water was not a bonus. If that stretch of the
river doesn't hold a nice population of prothonotaries, I'd be surprised.
