[va-richmond-general] Not good times for birds

I heard in the news tonight that the parents of the penguin "Toga" have
given up on him and are going to have another chick. This time they will be
watching the penguins closely. But that does not bring "Toga" back. Nobody
seems to know where he is.

I heard in the news tonight that some government game warden shot and killed
the beaver that had been chopping branches of trees at Lewis Ginter
Botanical Gardens. I know that this is not a bird, but it does remind me of
the campaign recently to kill as many black vultures as possible in the
Dutch Gap area.

We installed a "wiggler" from Wild Birds Unlimited in our bird bath today,
which consists of the bottom of a large plant pot filled with water. It
keeps the water running with ripples running through it. It is supposed to
attract birds but I wonder if it is scaring them away, since I did not see
many yesterday. Today I saw a lot of birds, but only one or two juncos. I
saw four blue jays, three mourning doves, two nuthatches, and a cardinal or
two in our back yard today, and my wife Anne saw a crow. We are still
getting huge flocks of robins in the trees in and near our yard, and tonight
I saw a large flock flying overhead, probably of robins.
