The same question occurred to me recently, but I concluded that the "new bird" 
was metaphorical, considering the next line "He sings a love song, as we walk

The song “Winter Wonderland” has lyrics that say “gone is the blue bird, 
here to stay is a new bird…” Is this “new bird” a dark-eyed junco (or 
northern junco, or snowbird)?
