[va-richmond-general] Merchant's Mill Pond-May 2, 2004

5 paddlers ignored the weathermen and headed to the Merchant's Mill Pond
this morning at the crack of 6. Warm breezes and in and out peeks of sun
made for perfect weather and a mosquito-less trip. The highlight of the trip
was a Barred Owl we watched feed along the swamp- line for frogs and lizards
and give us long close-up looks. Warbler song was everywhere and we had
several eye-level looks at Prothonotary's singing in the Spanish Moss.
Blooming lily pads carpeted the pond and purple wild iris accented the
cypress knees.

2 Alligators were seen by half of us, and we don't know what happened to the
rest of the group ;-)

The rain held off totally till we were loaded up and headed home.

Highlights:

Great Egret
Great Blue Heron
Wood Duck
Barred Owl
Acadian Flycatcher
Yellow-throated Vireo
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Blue-grey Gnatcatcher
Eastern Wood Pewee
Northern Parula
Yellow-throated Warbler
Black-throated blue Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler
Prothonotary Warbler
Scarlet Tanager

Ovenbird

Thanks to all who turned out. It was great!
