[va-richmond-general] Maymont Raptor Center

If you haven't been to Maymont this Summer, you may not know that they are
opening a raptor center next month. There's going to be a grand opening
celebration on September 13 around 11am, I believe, until 2 (according to the
signs there). Anyway, today they had out an adult Bald Eagle and what I think
is a female Cooper's Hawk in transition plumage. The eagle is injured and can
not fly, but they let it walk around where it's going to be to get it used to
its new habitat. If you've never seen a Bald Eagle walk before, it's an
interesting sight. They may be one of the most graceful birds in the air, but
walking on the ground they look like big, looping chickens. The Cooper's Hawk
(assuming I'm right, which is assuming a lot) was flying between a a couple of
different perches. I think I also heard it call as we were walking by it
previously. Worth checking out. The raptor center will be practically next door
to and across from the bears. I tried to take some pics but they aren't very
good. I'll try to post them when I fix them up a bit.
