Virginia Master Naturalist Program
The Riverine Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program will be
conducting its third training program beginning January 8, 2009. The program
trains volunteers to provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to
the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas in
Virginia. Program partners include Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia
Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Virginia Department of Conservation
and Recreation, Virginia Department of Forestry, and the Virginia Museum of
Natural History.
Training to become a certified Virginia Master Naturalist takes
several months. Volunteers complete a minimum of 40 hours of training,
including at least 10 in the field, followed by at least 40 hours of
volunteer service on projects approved by the local chapter. Some Riverine
projects include trail building at Powhatan Lakes, habitat improvement at
Virginia House, river and stream clean-up days, speaking to local groups on
bats, butterfly gardens, and backyard habitats.
The Riverine Chapter serves Richmond and surrounding counties,
including Hanover, Henrico, Chesterfield, Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent,
Charles City, and the City of Richmond. Training will begin January 8, 2009.
An information meeting open to the public will be held at 7:00, October 30,
in the DSS room at the Department of Health and Human Services, 12312
Washington Highway (Rt. 1) in Ashland. The program will be explained in more
