Another awesome season of MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) has come to a close at Dutch Gap and Powhatan as we banded Saturday and Sunday respectively. Numbers of birds have started leveling off but still continued to get that unexpected bird in the net as we saw yesterday in Powhatan netting our 3rd Worm Eating warbler of the season...this one a juvenile. Don't have the stats compiled yet... but suffice it to say we had good numbers of birds providing excellent data on breeding and habitat use and several birds we have never had in the nets before. So-we now can bump the alarm clocks a little beyond 3:45 am-sort through the photos and the spreadsheets and look forward to...did somebody mention Saw Whet Owls...........?
Big thanks to all the MAPS volunteers and their families and friends for supporting this "disease" we have and thanks to Chesterfield Parks and Rec, Richmond Audubon Society and Smurfit Stone in Hopewell for contributing to our efforts.
There are 2 Public "Demo" days slated for Sept. 13 and Oct. 4 at Dutch Gap. Watch the list serv and Richmond Audubon web-site for more details.
