Opening Day for the MAPS season in Powhatan was awesome. No other word to describe it. 7 of us opened the nets at 5:30 am and closed around noon with 47 netted birds. Birds hit the nets throughout the day with the biggest push just after sunrise. We netted Red, White/Black and Blue birds for the Memorial Day weekend. The highlight for all us I am sure was the netting of 4 Canada Warblers and a beautiful male Blackpoll. Swainson's and Grey-Cheeked Thrush not too shabby either! Of the 47 birds, we had 9 recapped birds: Indigo Bunting (5), Black and White Warbler, Tufted Titmouse and White-eyed Vireo (2).
Here's the list.
Northern Cardinal
Common Yellowthroat (female)
Black-throated Blue Warbler (female)
Canada Warbler (male and female)
White-eyed Vireo
Acadian Flycatcher
Black and White Warbler
Magnolia Warbler (male)
American Goldfinch (male and female)
Hooded Warbler (male)
Louisiana Waterthrush
Red-eyed Vireo
Indigo Bunting (male and female)
Ovenbird
Grey-Cheeked Thrush
Swainson's Thrush
Brown-headed Cowbird....
Downy Woodpecker
American Goldfinch (male and female)
Blue-grey Gnatcatcher
Tufted Titmouse
Must be a good day when Magnolia Warbler didn't come in as a top pick!
Here's a few pictures. Have a safe weekend.
