[va-richmond-general] MAPS Banding Dutch Gap 11 July 2009

A busy day at the Dutch Gap MAPS station as we opened nets at 5:30 am to the calls of Great Horned Owls and White-tailed deer eyes peering at us from their forest beds. We enjoyed some very welcome low humidity and light breezes for early July.

5 of us kept a steady pace with net runs and banding as we tallied 37 netted birds. 30 were recaps and the other 7 new captures-banded for the first time today. Here's the results for the day.

Northern Cardinal 10 (8 recaps)

Carolina Wren 9 (8 recaps)

Prothonotary Warbler 15 (14 recaps)

Brown Thrasher 1

Carolina Chickadee 2

Many Hatch year Carolina Wrens, Prothonotary's and Cardinals out there. We were really hoping the Yellow-billed Cuckoo's calling a good part of the day would hit the nets...maybe next time.

Thanks to the hearty group that turned out today.
