[va-richmond-general] Lesser Scaup at Woodland Pond

My neighbor, Randy Suhl, called me this morning to report an unusual duck  on 
our lake here in the Woodland Pond subdivision.  I went over to his  house, 
and we viewed it from his kitchen window and concluded that it was a male  
Lesser Scaup in plumage intermediate between eclipse and breeding (I guess the  
proper terminology is basic and alternate).  This was a first for our lake  in 
the 19 years that I've been here.
 
Note that the lake is private, but it may be worth checking other public  
locations e.g. Pocahontas, Henricus. The extreme cold in the Great Lakes may  
have moved this bird in.
