[va-richmond-general] January 2007 2nd Wednesday Birdwalk

John:

After you left some of us spotted a few ducks near the Pony Pasture parking lot
that looked different from either the male or female Buffleheads that were
present on the river. Checking the bird guidebooks did not help identify these
ducks. I am enclosing a couple of photos of these ducks, one on the water and
two on the wing and ask for your opinion on their Id. At this time I believe
that they are either 1st winter male Buffleheads or Male Buffleheads in eclipse
but I reserve the right to change my mind based on your input.

Quite a few birders today expressed surprise that the male Bufflehead was
anything but black and white so I have also attached is a picture of a male
Bufflehead from this morning that clearly shows the green and purple on the
head and throat area (photo bh01).

Since I do not have the email addresses of the entire group from the walk, I am
copying to the listserve.

Thanks for leading our walk today and every month.
