Join Caroline Coe and myself for a survey of the birds of the James River National Wildlife Refuge (JRNWR) in Prince George County as we gather our stats and submit to the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/
For the past few years Richmond area birders have done an outstanding job posting their observations and have kept us in the Top 10 throughout the country in reports. The GBBC starts next Friday Feb 13. Go to the above attached link for what you can do to participate.
Our walk will be Saturday February 14 so this is your chance to bring your favorite love bird out for a peaceful morning in the woods while helping gather data for science. Chocolate donations excepted :-).
In past years we have seen Bald Eagle, Barred Owl, Purple Finch, Great-Horned Owl. Red-Headed Woodpecker and Hermit Thrush as well as our expected winter residents. We will meet at 8am. The walk usually goes till about noon. The trail can be muddy so wear boots. Bring water binoculars, snacks and dress in layers. No facilities available. No limit on participants-would like you to sign up off the listserv if interested or call me at 530.3660 with your questions-evenings after 830 are best to call.
Directions to the JRNWR are as follows:
From the City of Hopewell, take route 10 east approximately 7 miles. Turn
left onto Flowerdew Hundred Road (SR 639)....the road is just past Parker's
convenience store. Proceed on Flowerdew Road for one mile and turn left at
the "Wildlife Refuge Information Kiosk" sign.
Thank you to Refuge Manager Cyrus Brame for his continued commitment to the environment and activities with Richmond Audubon.
Looking forward to seeing you next Saturday,
Julie Kacmarcik
