A man called the RAS phone number last week to tell us that he had a =
hummingbird that was flying around with her mouth open continuously at =
about 45 degrees. He said it almost looked like she had 2 beaks. She =
was nevertheless attempting to feed at his feeder and was aggressively =
chasing other birds away. He called back a couple of days later to say =
that he thought he had seen the bird again and she seemed to have =
"recovered". He thought he could recognize her because she was sort of =
"short and plump". He had developed a theory that maybe she had been =
stung by one of the yellowjackets that were constantly at the feeder and =
maybe that had temporarily paralyzed her jaw. Since I was quite bummed =
out by the first day's news I was more than happy to accept the 2nd =
day's news. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? He seemed to think =
that generally yellowjackets are successful in keeping the birds away =
from a feeder, so maybe for a hummingbird a sting can be a significantly =
damaging?
