Diane,
If you want to stay in Cape Charles, check out Ned Brinkley's place. He
is a birder of some renown, even mentioned in Tim Gallagher's book The
Grail Bird: Hot on the Trail of the Ivory- Billed Woodpecker. The
Allen's Hummingbird is still being seen there last I heard. I can't
remember the name of his place, but it is located at 9 Randolph Ave.
You could email him at phoebetria@xxxxxxx, the address he uses when
posting to the state listserv. RAS birders who have stayed there and
raved about it.
Pam

Diane, I'm from the Eastern Shore. The Kiptopeke area will
probably provide your best birding at a closer drive. You can bird in
the state park and on the beach and then go over to the eastern side to
the wildlife refuge. Sunset Beach is not expensive and I think the
accomodations are all right, but I've never stayed there. There is also
a nice B&B owned by a former teacher of mine called Pickett's Harbor.
Or there are probably a few B&B's in Cape Charles which is about 5 miles
north and worth a visit as well. Here is a website for the B&Bs,
http://www.bbonline.com/va/easternshore/region3.html . Have fun!

I accidentally sent this to Julie yesterday instead of
to the group. Here's my request.
I know Christmas Eve is not the best time to send out a
request, but I'll be reading feedback into next week. I'd like to spend
a couple of days birding and relaxing on the Eastern Shore early in
January, preferably closer to VA and thus less driving. The Blue Heron
looks good near Chincoteague, but that's farther than I want to drive if
something is closer, perhaps near Kiptopeke. I saw that the Sunset
Beach Inn near the cape is very close to birding and has hosted birding
events. Let me know recommendations. Price is probably a key factor.
I'm often frugal, and sometimes downright cheap, but I might move away
from budget accomadations if something sounded nifty and not too
expensive. Closeness to good food is also a plus. Other attractions
can also be a factor.
Thanks,
Diane Bumpass
