On Saturday, we made a day trip to Hog Island Wildlife Management Area. This
proved to be a great place for birding. We saw 6 or 7 Great Blue Herons, about
15 double crested cormorants, 2 Bald Eagles, two hawks, not sure what kind,
plenty of geese, and lots of beautiful smaller birds. Then when we left there,
we took the ferry across to Jamestown. From the ferry, we saw two more Bald
Eagles circling around above us. A gull would meet one, and circle around with
it, then veer off. Once we got across, one of the pilings was completely full
of cormorants. Their green eyes were pretty in the late afternoon sun. A gull
flew by with a very large fish in his mouth, and a pelican came along hoping to
steal it from him. Very nice day for birding. Then, as we were coming back
across, waiting for the ferry, a great blue heron walked along the wall right
past our car. He stopped for a moment right next to our car. Needless to say,
it was
dark, so the picture isn't great, but I thought it was funny. If I've made
any errors in identifying the birds, feel free to correct me. I wish I knew
more of them!
