It was another great day out at Henricus Historical Park/Dutch Gap Conservation
Area. Crisp, calm and cold to start, and warmer but breezier by the time we
finished up, it was a great day to be outdoors.
We had a good variety of ducks - good numbers of Ring-necked Ducks, Gadwall,
Northern Shovelers, and of course Mallards, with a smattering of Wood Ducks and
American Wigeon. The stars of the day were a pair of Northern Pintails that
gave good, extended looks. It was also a good raptor day - we were greeted by a
Northern Harrier (seen regularly on the past few RAS visits) cruising the marsh
and with Bald Eagles just about everywhere we looked. While we were enjoying
the duck action, a pair of Peregrine Falcons made a pass at a distant flock,
but were chased off by a reappearance of the Harrier. Kestrel, Red-shouldered
Hawk, and a flyover by the probable wintering Osprey rounded out the birds of
prey. Oh, of course, there were vultures of both varieties, as always.
On the passerine front, we had White-throated Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Swamp
Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Junco, Yellow-rumped Warbler, many Eastern Bluebirds
and Goldfinches, along with the usual suspects. No Savannah Sparrows this time.
We experienced a very low tide, but though we looked hard, were unable to find
any Snipe this time.
