late afternoon yesterday, I saw the following birds at Henricus:
Great Blue Herons
Ospreys
Red-winged Blackbirds
Northern Cardinals
Canada Geese
Yellow Warblers
Eastern Bluebirds
Turkey Vultures
Double-crested Cormorants
Caspian Terns (2)
Laughing Gulls
Tree Swallows
Prothonotary Warblers
Carolina Chickadees
Hairy Woodpecker (heard only)
Downy Woodpeckers
Pileated Woodpeckers
Red-bellied Woodpecker (saw one, heard several)
Northern Flicker
Wood Ducks
Eastern Kingbird
Yellow-rumped Warblers (everywhere)
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers
Great-crested Flycatcher
American Redstart
not bad for about 2 1/2 hours in the late afternoon. I did notice something
interesting about a pair of Ospreys. They were sitting on the same branch about
10 feet apart from each other (probably less). They each had a fish and they
didn't seem bothered by the presence of the other - I'm guessing these were
mates? Possibly the same pair whose nest was reported lost recently? Only one
was eating its fish, however. The other was merely holding it. Both fish were
nearly as big as the Ospreys themselves.
Had my first Gray Catbird of the year at my feeders this morning (Sunday).
