Seven warmly dressed birders spent the morning at Henricus on Saturday.
The marshes were frozen which meant that the ducks were huddled together
on the ice. "Sitting Ducks", Grace called them. We got good looks at
Wood Ducks, (the males are so beautiful against the icy water), Wigeons
and several other species. Sadly we saw only one Great Blue Heron on the
nest. As we scoped out the marsh from the parking lot overlook, we saw
four immature Bale Eagles perched in the trees. As we watched, one of
them flew over and harassed the lone Great Blue, driving her from the
nest. The eagle rearranged sticks for a while as the Great Blue kept a
respectable distance. At one point the Great Blue began harassing the
eagle. Too cold to stand still for the end of the story, we walked back
into Dutch Gap. We saw 43 species, the most notable of which was an
Osprey.
Here's our list: Double Crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Black
Vulture, Turkey Vulture, Canada Goose, Wood Duck., Green Wing Teal,
Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Ring-neck Duck,
Osprey, Bald Eagle ( 4 immature and 1 mature), American Kestrel,
Killdeer, Ring-billed Gull, Mourning Dove, Kingfisher, Red-bellied
Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Carolina Chickadee,
Tufted Titmouse, White-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Carolina Wren,
Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Eastern Bluebird, American Robin, Northern
Mockingbird, Starling, Yellow-rumped Warbler (3), Palm Warbler, Northern
Cardinal, Savannah Sparrow,
Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Red-winged
Blackbird, Grackle and American Goldfinch
